Oil Tank FAQ's (Frequenty Asked Questions)

When should I replace my oil tank?
We recommend replacing any oil tank over 25 years old. In addition, any tank that is "moist", on the bottom, should be replaced.

Can I leave my old underground oil tank in the ground and just install a new one in my basement?
If you take an underground tank out of service, it cannot be left empty. Massachusetts legislation requires that an underground tank be removed from the ground.

What happens to the underground tank when I sell my property?
Massachusetts legislation requires the underground tank be removed from the ground and an above-ground to be installed. No property will be sold with underground tanks on them.

When oil is delivered, does my oil tank get filled to the top?
No, oil tanks are not topped off upon delivery. Each tank, whether underground or above ground has a vent alarm that signals when a tank is full. The vent alarm stops whistling when oil reaches the end of the vent alarm which signals the oil driver to stop filling your tank.

What problems could I have with an oil tank installed outside?
With our New England weather, exposed oil lines outside can develop condensation. In extremely cold weather, the condensation can frost and restrict the flow of oil from the tank to the heating equipment. Outside tanks are affected by the weather. Keeping the tank free from rust becomes a regular maintenance issue.
